This will be the first in a three-part series based on the BMC policy of Withdrawing, Withholding or Limiting Life Support. Because this policy often arises in the context of a patient's terminal illness, the second session of this series will be focused on revisions and amendments to the policy.

In this Grand Rounds, we will take a step back from invoking the policy to discuss the importance of having meaningful Goals of Care conversations with patients and families, aimed at helping them understand the severity of the illness, the treatment options, and helping them set goals that are both clinically realisrtic and in line with their beliefs and values.
