Primary Target Audience:

Pulmonary, Allergy, Sleep and Critical Care faculty and staff, medicine faculty, trainees in medicine, allergy, pulmonary and critical care, and BU community members with an interest in pulmonary, allergy, sleep and critical care medicine.

Overall Objective:

-Explain why sedatives are administered to mechanically ventilated patients, and the simultaneous potential risks associated with this practice
-Describe how validated scoring systems related to depth of sedation (e.g. RASS) are used in the administration of sedative medications in the intensive care unit
-Identify the wide variation in sedation practices across United States ICUs as related to depth of sedation of mechanically ventilated patients, and identify factors associated with this variation
