Daniel P. Alford, MD, MPH, FACP, DFASAM

Associate Dean and Professor of Medicine

Daniel P. Alford, MD, MPH, FACP, DFASAM, is a Professor of Medicine, Associate Dean of CME and Director of the Safe and Competent Opioid Prescribing Education (SCOPE of Pain) program at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM). He is on staff in the Section of General Internal Medicine and director of the Clinical Addiction Research and Education (CARE) Unit at Boston Medical Center (BMC). He is also Medical Director of the Office-Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) program, the Boston University Evidence-based SBIRT Training Project and the Massachusetts SBIRT Training and Technical Assistance (MASBIRT TTA) program. He is immediate past-president of the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse (AMERSA). He was recognized as a Champion of Change by the White House and in 2014 received the national AMA “Award for Health Education”. His clinical, educational and research interests focus on opioid use disorders and safe and competent opioid prescribing for chronic pain.


Linda G. Baer, MSPH, CHCP

Grant Manager and Developer

Linda G. Baer, MSPH, CHCP, joined BUSM CME/CNE in June 2021. She researches and develops grant proposals primary focused on quality improvement initiatives, collaborating with faculty, staff, medical writers, and external partners. She is also the Co-Founder & COO of ECHO Diabetes Action Network. Trained in public health policy and management, she has been in the field of continuing healthcare education since 2000 and has led continuing medical education departments at Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School and Stanford University. Her expertise in creating education based on adult learning principles has led to the development of thousands of CME programs. While the Director of CME for Stanford, she built online programs that are nationally recognized for their innovation.


Michael Burk, BS

Program Operations Manager - Projects

Michael Burk, BS, Program Operations Manager- Projects, has been with the department since 2012. Mr. Burk has over fifteen years of CME project management experience. He manages enduring materials, internet-based CME activities, international programming, and various live meetings conducted independently by BUSM or jointly with our educational partners.


Elizabeth Drury, BA

Senior Program Operations Manager, Compliance, RSS and LMS

Elizabeth Drury, B.A. began working for BUSM CME in 2007, as a program manager, working with our partners on jointly provided programs. She moved to Charleston, SC in 2010, where she managed the CME Department for four years. She comes back to BUSM CME as a Program Operations Manager, working with our outside Medical Education Partners. She is also responsible for accreditation compliance for the department. Elizabeth has almost 20 years of CME experience working on jointly provided and independently provided programs, enduring materials, internet activities, performance improvement programs, and regularly scheduled series.


Sophia Finfer, BA

Grant Manager and Developer

Sophia Finfer, BA, RYT-200, joined the BUSM CME/CNE team in October 2021 as the Senior Program Manager for Grant Funding. She researches and develops grant proposals, collaborating with faculty, staff, medical writers, and external partners. While new to CME, Sophia has 10 years of experience in grant writing, public health, and higher education development. She is also a certified yoga instructor.


Sakina Flint, MS

Program Manager

With some dancing across the country as a professional performer, Sakina Flint, B.A., Performing Arts, practically waltzed her way to arrive at BUSM CME as RSS Program Manager in November 2016. [Along with her dance training] She has over 6 years of experience working in healthcare and over 8 years of experience in administration. Before joining Boston University, she worked as executive assistant to the CEO, contracts manager, and project manager at a local hospital. Sakina feels that this experience prepared her to excel in the program management area. With her passion for the performing arts, Sakina believes that education, specifically health care education, is key in promoting overall wellness. She is grateful to be in this new role, and excited to work with each client to help provide successful CMEs for their programs.


Emmett Grealish, BA

Administrative Coordinator

Emmett Grealish, BA Boston University Class of 2018, is an Administrative Coordinator who joined the CME Office in September 2021. He supports the Grants and Contracts Manager and the Senior Program Manager, Accreditation and Outcomes.



Claire Grimble, CMP

Conference Operations Manager

Claire P. Grimble, CMP, is our Conference Operations Manager and has been with the CME Office since 2001. She plans and manages all aspects of our directly sponsored and jointly accredited live conferences (in-person, virtual and hybrid). She has over 25 years’ experience in meeting planning and has held her Certified Meeting Professional designation since 2002. She is a graduate of Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.


Ilana Hardesty, MLA

Assistant Director, CME Operations

Ilana Hardesty, B.A., Psychology and Social Relations, joined BUSM CME as a program manager in 2007. Ilana has a background working as a project manager in several science and arts based organizations. Ilana is in charge of affiliate programs, Internet-based CME activities, and several of our enduring material activities. Ilana leads the Continuing Nursing Education Provider Unit within the CME office; the Unit received re-accreditation with distinction from the American Nurses Credentialing Center Commission on Accreditation in 2012. She is also Program Operations Manager for SCOPE of Pain, a multi-year project funded by the first grant awarded to address the FDA-mandated Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy for ER/LA Opioid Analgesics.


Emily Jansen, MPH

Senior Program Manager

Emily Jansen, MPH, joined BUSM CME in 2014 as a Program Assistant. After several years of progressive growth and responsibility, she became the Senior Program Manager for Quality and Performance Improvement in 2018. Emily directly manages quality improvement programs and oversees the QI Hub, the central QI educational resource for the Boston Medical Center Health System, which is jointly provided by BUSM CME and the Department of Quality and Patient Safety. Emily serves as a manager and faculty member for our two flagship quality improvement capacity-building programs: the Leading Change Collaborative and the Improvement Leadership Academy. She provides consultative and technical assistance to members of the BMC community on their own quality improvement projects. Emily also facilitates strategic planning and provides analytic support for the BUSM CME Overall Program Evaluation team.


Naomi Moeller, BA, CHCP

Senior Operations Manager - Accreditation and Outcomes

Naomi Moeller, BA, Sociology and Anthropology, joined BUSM CME as a Program Manager in 2011 with over ten years’ experience working in Continuing Medical Education. Currently Naomi manages the Journals Program, multiple direct and jointly provided activities, live conferences and outcomes for various programs.


Catherine Pagliaro, BS

Program Assistant

Catherine Pagliaro, BS, is the Administrative Coordinator who joined the BUSM CME office in November 2019. She currently supports the office administratively and provides direct support to multiple CME programs, including SCOPE of Pain, SHIELD, the Journals Program and some conferences.


Andy Paraskevas, BFA

Senior Designer & Marketing Manager

Andy Paraskevas, BFA, joined the BUSM CME team in 2012. He is our Senior Designer & Marketing Manager who handles all of the design needs for our website, promotional materials, email campaigns, and the general marketing of CME/CE programs. In addition, Mr Paraskevas is responsible for ensuring BU marketing/design compliance throughout the office.



Rosie Rith

Director of Budget & Reporting

Rosie Rith, B.S., Accounting, joined BUSM CME in 2017 as the Financial Analyst and is responsible for the management of day to day financial operations. She works with the director and program managers on overall budgeting and fiscal year tracking of projects to ensure accurate financial accounting and reconciliation. She brings financial management acumen to the office from prior years of experience in corporate finance. Currently, she is pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Information Systems with a concentration in Health Informatics.


Natalie Sanfratello, MPH, BA

Program and Contracts Manager

Natalie Sanfratello, MPH, is the Program and Contracts Manager in the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, Continuing Medical Education Office. She began her tenure in the CME Office in 2015 as an Office Administrator and after several years of growth she now manages quality improvement initiatives and other large scale national continuing education programs. Natalie co-manages the QI Hub, the central QI educational resource for the Boston Medical Center (BMC) Health System, which is jointly provided by the CME Office and the BMC Department of Quality and Patient Safety. Natalie serves as a manager and faculty member for our two flagship quality improvement capacity-building programs: the Leading Change Collaborative and the Improvement Leadership Academy. She provides consultative and technical assistance to members of the BMC community on their quality improvement projects. She completed quality improvement training through the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Model for Improvement. Additionally, she helps to prepare and submit grant proposals and drafts and executes business contracts and letters of agreement. Natalie earned her master of public health degree from Boston University School of Public Health in 2016.

Ernestina Sena

Shield Administrative Coordinator

Ernestina Sena joined BUSM CME in April 2022.  As the School Health Institute Administrative Coordinator, she works with the program manager and director of SHIELD to offer customer service to our learners, to create activities in our learning management system, and to track registrations and financial transactions for the program.



Carmela A. Townsend, DNP, MS/MBA, RN

Accredited Provider Program Director

Dr. Carmela A. Townsend has been involved in planning, executing, and evaluating continuing education programs for nurses for over twenty years. One of the first projects she worked on involved three statewide conferences with hundreds of nurse educators in a consensus building model to find ways to foster community based education for all levels of nursing education. Her familiarity with and ability to communicate ANCC Primary Accreditation program criteria for Provider Units to stakeholders has been built over the past fifteen years through her work with the Accredited Approver Unit of the American Nurses Association Massachusetts (ANAMASS-AU). She has performed hundreds of quantitative reviews of individual activities as well as for provider unit applications for ANAMASS-AU, which received six year accreditation with distinction in 2014 and was also recognized by the ANCC in 2016 for excellence in Primary Accreditation with the Premier Award. In 2016, Dr. Townsend was the co-investigator on the American Nurses Foundation funded Sayre Memorial Scholar and Mary Elizabeth Carnegie Grant for the research project, “An exploration of the sustained impact of the Clinical Leadership Collaborative for Diversity in Nursing (CLCDN) Program among African American Nurse Participants.” She and her colleagues will be presenting the results of this qualitative research at the 2018 Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society Research Congress in Melbourne Australia in July.


Julie L. White, MS, CHCP


Julie White, MS, CHCP, is the Director, Continuing Medical Education. Julie has been with BUSM CME since 1995, directing the day-to-day operations of the office. She is responsible for overseeing all accreditation, financial, and personnel areas of our operations. Julie has considerable experience in the area of adult learning, educational design, and program development. Julie has given numerous presentations at the Alliance and other venues including talks on performance improvement, re-accreditation, small group learning, and the interface of quality improvement and continuing medical education.


Lesly Zapata, BA

SHIELD Program Manager

Lesly Zapata, BA in Neuroscience, is a program manager who joined the BUSM CME/CE office in October 2020. She currently supports SHIELD (School Health Institute for Education and Leadership Development). She works with the Boston University School of Public Health Activist Lab to provide accredited educational programs.
