Session One: Puberty Best Practices

This is part of the Sexual Health Education Best Practices Series. 

The focus of session 1 is on inclusive and effective strategies for teaching young learners about all types of changes. General best practices for teaching about puberty will be reviewed. Puberty Education Toolkit will be shared with participants.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be better able to: 

  • Describe three techniques to create an inclusive and affirming learning environment
  • List three physical, three social, and three emotional changes that occur during puberty
  • Describe the importance of teachers’ maintaining professional boundaries when teaching sex education
  • Demonstrate and describe inclusive and affirming language
  • Explain how gender identity and gender expression are distinct from each other and sexual orientation
