Robert J. Krane, MD Visiting Professor - June 19, 2026
Intended to keep students, house-staff, community urologists and faculty informed and updated on new advances in urologic management and screening techniques
Target Audience
Urologic and Surgery faculty, community urologists, house-staff and students
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this conference the participants will be able to:
- Describe the evolution of BPH/LUTS understanding from a single-organ obstruction model to a systemic condition involving metabolic, inflammatory, and neurogenic factors
- Compare the contemporary BPH/LUTS diagnostic toolkit including IPSS, uroflowmetry, PSA kinetics, prostate imaging (TRUS to mpMRI), and pressure-flow urodynamics
- Outline the pharmacologic management of BPH/LUTS including alpha-blockers, 5-ARIs, combination therapy (MTOPS/CombAT evidence), PDE5 inhibitors, and beta-3 agonists
- Evaluate the evidence base, indications, and limitations for contemporary MISTs including UroLift, Rezum, Aquablation, and Optilume
- Apply evidence-based shared decision-making to match BPH/LUTS interventions to patient anatomy (prostate size, median lobe), values (ejaculatory preservation), and clinical context
- Discuss the role of AI in healthcare innovation, including safety limitations demonstrated by the Nature Medicine ChatGPT Health evaluation (52% emergency under-triage), and the need for independent clinical guardrails
- Describe the men's health center model integrating urology with endocrinology, cardiology, mental health, and primary care for comprehensive longitudinal BPH/LUTS management.
