Lung cancer is the second most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer deaths in the US. Smoking is the most important risk factor for lung cancer, thought to account for 90% of all lung cancer cases. While the five-year survival rate for lung cancer is 20.5%, early-stage lung cancer has a better prognosis. Thus, screening for lung cancer in select patient populations at greater risk is crucial. However, screening rates for individuals who meet lung cancer screening (LCS) eligibility criteria are only about 5.8 – 6.5%, indicating a need for improvement..
The overall goal of this program is to promote clinician awareness of current LCS screening guidelines and eligibility in order to increase screening rates and improve lung cancer mortality.
Target Audience
Primary care, pulmonology, and surgery clinicians (physicians, NPs, physician assistants).
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the learner or healthcare team will be able to:
- Describe the role of lung cancer screening in improving lung cancer mortality
- Apply the eligibility criteria for lung cancer screening
- Optimize shared decision-making with eligible patients by providing education about the benefits and drawbacks of lung cancer screening and using appropriate decision aids
- Review lung cancer screening follow-up and testing when there are incidental or suspicious pulmonary nodules
- Develop strategies to overcome barriers to lung cancer screening and follow-up
