Intimate Partner Violence and Brain Injury – A Training for Social Workers, Medical Providers, and the Community - May 21, 2024

Overview: Join this webinar led by Social Worker Dr. Sonya Crabtree-Nelson, PhD, and Psychologist Dr. Dorothy Kozlowski, PhD, discussing the intersection of intimate partner violence/domestic violence (IPV/DV) and brain injuries. Attendees will gain essential knowledge and skills for recognizing, assessing, and responding to IPV/DV survivors, particularly those who have experienced brain injuries. The course equips participants with practical strategies for safety planning tailored to IPV/DV survivors, emphasizing trauma-informed approaches and culturally competent care. Additionally, it explores best practices for intervention and support, highlighting the significance of interdisciplinary collaboration and survivor-centered care.

Target Audience

Social Workers, Psychologists, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses. Allied health professionals and the general public are welcome.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this activity, the learner or the healthcare team should be able to:

  • Describe the correlation between IPV/DV and brain injuries.
  • Identify concussion signs and symptoms.
  • Describe the impacts DV/IPV has on survivors symptoms and recovery.
  • Identify the barriers to treatment for DV/IPV survivors.
  • Recall available resources for DV/IPV survivors.
  • Identify other healthcare providers who DV/IPV survivors should be referred to for comprehensive care.
  • Recall the components of safety planning for a DV/IPV survivors.
