Dr. Vassalotti is a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Chief Medical Officer of the National Kidney Foundation. His academic expertise focuses on primary care and population health for chronic kidney disease (CKD), emphasizing lifestyle interventions, the use of kidney- and cardioprotective medications and interdisciplinary care.

Dr. Vassalotti led the development of the Kidney Health Evaluation for Adults with Diabetes quality measure, which advances evidence-based CKD testing by incorporating estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urine albumin-creatinine ratio (uACR) for detection, risk stratification, and targeted interventions. He also served as the principal investigator for an AARP-funded Quality Measures Innovation grant, evaluating the impact of Kidney Health Evaluation testing on CKD detection, treatment, and health equity. The Kidney Health Evaluation is included in commercial, Medicare and Medicaid quality metrics. Currently, he is a co-investigator for the CDC’s Kidney Disease Surveillance System. These and other collaborative efforts have resulted in over 150 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

In addition to his research and care implementation work, Dr. Vassalotti maintains an active clinical practice, seeing approximately 40 patients weekly, including local, regional, international, and second-opinion consultations. He also clinically supervises nephrology fellows and other trainees. Dr. Vassalotti prioritizes individualized patient engagement, empowering people living with kidney disease to embrace healthier lifestyles to achieve better health outcomes and fuller lives.
