This program is designed for individuals who have direct contact with the public and in the course of their jobs may encounter angry, hostile individuals. It is also useful for individuals who find themselves clashing with co-workers. 

The training is designed as a skill-building workshop with a focus on communication skills that help defuse volatile situations with angry, agitated individuals. The course also covers the importance of safety planning and environmental factors that could impact behavior. This course is for people who have never learned these techniques or for people who would like to refresh their skills.

Target Audience

School Health Professionals, School Nurses 

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the four components of a defusing strategy; Control, Acknowledge, Refocus, Problem-Solve
  • Use communication techniques that calm volatile situations
  • Understand how to design their workplace to minimize disruptive and volatile behavior

Alison Freedman

Alison Freedman is an executive coach and corporate trainer who helps leaders increase confidence and improve performance through effective communication. Alison creates an open and engaging learning environment that both challenges and supports individuals and groups. For over 15 years she has worked with individuals from diverse industries, such as government, consulting, technology, banking, and non-profit management. Her client list includes the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Boston Consulting Group, Bank of America, Mercer, Dell EMC, Cambridge Savings Bank, CBRE, and The TJX Companies. Alison earned an M.B.A and Masters in Education at the University of Michigan where she founded the dual master’s degree program. She received her B.A. in English at Duke University.
