Learning Objectives
- Interpret unexpected urine toxicology results for patients stable on medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), differentiating between true positives, false positives, and possible contamination.
- Assess each case scenario by integrating the patient’s history, plausibility of the clinical story, and confirmatory testing results to establish an accurate working diagnosis.
- Formulate a patient-centered management plan that considers the stage of substance use disorder, the patient’s medical and psychosocial stability, and safety priorities.
- Demonstrate effective, nonjudgmental communication strategies to negotiate next steps with the patient, establish follow-up intervals, and ensure ongoing engagement in care.
