Target Audience

Physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician associates and social workers

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants, or the healthcare team, will be able to:

  • Define substance use disorder (SUD) and opioid use disorder (OUD).
  • Identify FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), including methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone.
  • Adapt care planning approaches to address the unique needs of residents with co-occurring SUD and other chronic conditions
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to align care planning with both clinical best practices and resident-identified priorities
  • Define and differentiate between self-stigma, social stigma, and structural stigma as they relate to SUD in long-term care settings
  • Demonstrate the use of person-first, non-stigmatizing language when communicating about residents with SUD across care settings
  • Identify key referral partners across the care continuum, including opioid treatment programs (OTPs), office-based addiction treatment (OBAT) programs, hospitals, recovery organizations, and community-based social services
  • Develop collaborative partnerships with community and regional providers to strengthen care coordination and reduce gaps in SUD-related services
