Reversing Course: The Mental Health Crisis
BU Wheelock College of Education & Human Development and the Ivy Street School present the third in a series of conversations with leaders across the sector as we explore the impact of COVID-19 and other issues on the mental health of young people today.
In December 2021, the U.S. Surgeon General warned that young people face “devastating” mental health effects due to challenges they’re currently experiencing. These challenges include many related to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as loss of parents or caregivers, increased divorce rates, and economic stress. In addition, issues such as climate change, income inequality, racial injustice, the opioid epidemic, and gun violence continue to negatively impact young people’s lives.
As more and more youth confront amplified anxiety and grief stemming from the sustained emotional, social, and economic trauma, issues like chronic absenteeism, lagging school performance, and increased physical aggression are on the rise. Join our panelists to explore these questions and more:
