SHIELD is a continuing education program that empowers school nurses and health professionals to manage the full range of health and wellness issues facing our schools and communities. We offer clinical, management, and leadership programs that prepare school nurses and health professionals to serve as school health leaders, provide equitable care, and build effective student health services systems.

A program of the Boston University School of Public Health, SHIELD is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. We partner with the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine's Barry M. Manuel Center for Continuing Education to deliver continuing education credits that fulfill state licensure and certification requirements.

Community Assessment for School Health (CSHS Session 3) (Zoom; February 25, 2026, from 12:30 - 3:00 PM) This is the third of four sessions designed to guide school nurses in conducting health needs assessments and using data to address gaps and barriers affecting the health of school-aged children. Strengthening Your Leadership Presence and Management Practices (Spring 2026 Cohort) (blended - self-paced/Zoom) This 3-month course supports experienced and new school nurse leaders in developing skills and building their leadership identity. An Introduction to Medication Administration and Delegation in MA Schools Provides essential information on medication administration and delegation in Massachusetts schools, covering laws, nurse roles, and best practices. Mandated for initial school nursing licensure. Managing a Medication Administration and Delegation Program in MA Schools For school administrators and School Nurse Medication Program Managers (required every 3 years) who oversee medication administration programs. Medication Administration for Unlicensed Assistive Personnel A self-paced course for unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) training to administer medications.
